Hyperliquid vs Coinbase Advanced for perpetual futures

Verified against Coinbase Developer Platform: Advanced Trade perpetual futures and Coinbase: Advanced Perpetuals · by Hyperliquid Academy

The short answer

Coinbase is the most recognisable custodial brand in crypto, and its perpetuals are a promotion-priced product offered by a Bermuda entity to retail traders outside the United States. Hyperliquid is an on-chain order book with your funds in your own account and a standing fee schedule. Right now Coinbase is cheaper on paper. The word to notice is promotional.

Hyperliquid against Coinbase Advanced, entry tier, no volume history. Hyperliquid figures verified 8 Sept 2026; Coinbase Advanced figures verified 14 Sept 2026 against Coinbase Developer Platform: Advanced Trade perpetual futures.

Fees

Coinbase’s developer guide states the current perpetuals rates as 0% to makers and 0.03% to takers, and describes them as low promotional rates. Hyperliquid’s tier 0 is 0.015% maker and 0.045% taker, or 0.0432% taker with a referral code.

That is a real gap in Coinbase’s favour today. It is also a gap Coinbase has told you is temporary. Hyperliquid’s schedule is published with tiers, staking discounts and maker rebates, and the referral discount runs for your first $25,000,000.00 of volume rather than until a promotion is withdrawn.

Cost of a $10,000 taker order as each discount is added

  • Base rate, no discounts $4.50 0.045% Tier 0, nothing staked
  • With referral code $4.32 0.0432% 4% off, applies from trade one
  • Referral + Silver staking $3.67 0.03672% Over 1K HYPE staked and linked
  • Referral + Diamond staking $2.59 0.02592% Over 500K HYPE staked and linked
  • Everything, at the top volume tier $1.38 0.01382% Over $7B of 14-day volume as well

Funding matters more than either number on anything held overnight. Hyperliquid settles funding hourly; the funding calculator shows what a holding period costs before the basis points matter.

Custody, support and what breaks

Coinbase holds your funds and gives you what comes with that: account recovery, a support desk, a listed parent company and a regulated entity behind each product. Hyperliquid holds nothing; you have sole control and nobody to call.

Those are different failure modes rather than a safe one and a risky one. On Coinbase you carry the exchange’s solvency and its decisions about your account. On Hyperliquid you carry your own key management and the bridges you use. Our risk page ranks those honestly.

Access

Coinbase verifies identity, and perpetuals on Coinbase Advanced are available only to retail traders in eligible non-US jurisdictions. US customers have a separate product: CFTC-regulated nano perpetual-style futures on BTC and ETH through Coinbase Financial Markets, at up to 10x, with a different fee schedule that this page does not compare.

Hyperliquid verifies nobody and excludes residents of the United States and Ontario, Canada, along with sanctioned jurisdictions, under its Terms of Use. For a US trader, Coinbase has an answer and Hyperliquid does not; our country pages say so rather than pointing at a workaround.

Where Coinbase Advanced is genuinely better

  • Cheaper on both sides, for as long as the promotion runs.
  • Fiat in and out from a bank account or card, in the same app as spot.
  • A regulated US route, even though it is a separate and smaller product.
  • Account recovery, a support desk and a listed parent company.
  • The most familiar interface for someone who already holds crypto on Coinbase.

Where Hyperliquid is genuinely better

  • A standing schedule, with published tiers, rather than a promotional rate.
  • You keep custody.
  • No identity check and no regional eligibility review.
  • Far more perpetual markets, including builder-deployed equities, commodities and foreign exchange.
  • Maker fees fall to zero at higher tiers and then pay a rebate.
  • Hourly funding, no gas on trades, everything verifiable on-chain.

Who should pick which

Pick Coinbase Advanced if you already hold crypto on Coinbase, you want to fund from a bank, you are in the United States and want the regulated nano contracts, or you value a support desk above holding your own keys.

Pick Hyperliquid if you want your balance in your own account, you trade markets Coinbase does not list, you want a schedule that is not a promotion, or you want to verify the venue rather than trust it.

Today Coinbase wins the price line and Hyperliquid wins on custody and breadth. Check the Coinbase promotion is still running on the day you read this; the date at the top of the table says when we last did.

Frequently asked questions

Is Coinbase cheaper than Hyperliquid for perpetuals?

At the moment, yes, on both sides. Coinbase describes its zero maker and low taker rates as promotional. Hyperliquid's schedule is a standing one, and with a referral code its taker rate is still above Coinbase's promotional figure.

Can US customers trade perpetuals on Coinbase?

Not on Coinbase Advanced, whose perpetuals are offered by Coinbase Bermuda to non-US customers. US customers get CFTC-regulated nano perpetual-style futures on BTC and ETH through Coinbase Financial Markets, at up to 10x. Hyperliquid excludes US residents.

Does Coinbase require KYC?

Yes, and eligibility for perpetuals depends on your region as well. Hyperliquid asks for no documents and restricts access by region instead.

Which has more leverage?

Coinbase's product page states 1x to 50x on eligible markets, while its developer guide states a 10x maximum; we use the product page. Hyperliquid's ceiling applies to BTC alone. Neither is a recommendation.
