Search for Hyperliquid leverage and you will be told 50x. That figure is out of date. The current ceiling is 40x, it applies to BTC and nothing else, and even there it holds only up to a notional threshold.

One market reaches the ceiling. The large majority sit at 3x. If a guide quotes you a single headline number for this exchange, it is not describing the market you are about to trade.

This is exactly the kind of number that goes stale in a copied article and stays stale for years. Every leverage figure on this page comes from the exchange’s live metadata, which is refreshed automatically, so it changes when the venue changes.

The published margin tiers

Published margin tiers. Maximum leverage steps down as a position gets larger, so the headline figure applies only up to the first threshold. Verified 8 Sept 2026.

The mechanic behind that table: maximum leverage is not a fixed property of a market, it is a property of a market and your position size together. Cross a notional threshold and the ceiling steps down, so the same market demands more margin per dollar of exposure as your position grows. This is standard practice on large venues, and it exists so that one enormous position cannot be liquidated into a book that cannot absorb it.

How margin is calculated

Initial margin is straightforward: position size times mark price, divided by your chosen leverage. That is the collateral the position ties up when you open it.

Maintenance margin is the level below which you are liquidated, and it is set at half the initial margin requirement at the market’s maximum leverage. So on a 40x market the maintenance requirement is 1.25% of notional, and on a 3x market it is around 16.7%.

What that means concretely

On a market whose maximum is 40x, a position can be liquidated by a move of a little over one percent against you once your margin is exhausted. That is well inside a normal hour on a crypto market. High leverage is not a way to make more money on the same view, it is a way to be removed from a correct view by ordinary noise.

Setting leverage in the app

Leverage is set per market, before you size the trade, and it applies to new positions in that market.

The order matters more than it looks. The size slider expresses a percentage of the maximum position your collateral and leverage allow. Change the leverage after setting the slider and the position size changes underneath you. Set leverage first, then type an explicit size rather than dragging.

Choosing a number

A useful way to think about it, rather than picking a number that sounds bold.

Look at the market’s typical daily range. Divide 100 by the leverage you are considering to get roughly how far the price can move before your whole margin is gone. If that distance is smaller than a normal day’s range in that market, your position will probably be closed by noise before your thesis has a chance to be right or wrong.

For most crypto markets a normal day can move several percent. That arithmetic rules out double-digit leverage for anything you intend to hold overnight.

Leverage is not the risk lever people think

Two corrections worth internalising.

Leverage does not change your fee rate. Fees are on notional. Ten times leverage on a thousand dollars pays the same fee as no leverage on ten thousand.

Leverage does not change your exposure, size does. The risk in a position comes from its notional value, not from the leverage figure. You can take identical risk at 2x with more collateral or at 20x with less. What leverage changes is how much room you have before liquidation, which is why lower is safer at the same exposure.

How liquidation is actually calculated, including the partial liquidation rules for larger positions, and the difference between isolated and cross margin, which determines what a liquidation can reach. To put your own numbers through the formula, use the liquidation calculator. For the other two figures the guides get wrong, see our corrections page.

Frequently asked questions

Is the maximum leverage on Hyperliquid 50x?

Not any more. Read from the exchange's own market metadata, the ceiling is 40x and it applies to BTC alone. Articles quoting 50x are repeating an older schedule.

Why did my available leverage drop when I increased my position?

Margin tiers. Above a published notional threshold the maximum leverage for that market steps down, so a larger position requires proportionally more margin.

Does higher leverage cost more in fees?

No. Fees are charged on notional position value, and leverage only determines how much notional a given amount of collateral can control. The rate is identical.

What leverage should I actually use?

Low enough that a normal daily range in that market does not approach your liquidation price. For most markets and most people that means single digits, in isolated margin.
